Summer Repertory Theatre - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Because we know that the arts often provide an opening door for discussion about hard topics, the Palliative Care Institute at Western Washington University is collaborating with The Bellingham Theater Works (BTW), our local community repertory theater company, to mount a series of plays this summer through the Fairhaven Repertory Theater series.  Each play has a major character who has cancer.

The third play is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. This play surrounds a family celebrating the sixty-fifth birthday of their patriarch, Big Daddy, as they have sentimentally dubbed him. The mood is somber, despite the festivities, as a number of evils poison the gaiety: greed, sins of the past and desperate hope as the knowledge that Big Daddy is dying slowly makes the rounds.

The Palliative Care Institute will be hosting an audience 'talk-back' after the Sunday, July 21st performance.

Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them) - Sallie Tisdale

Sallie Tisdale has been a nurse for many years, including a decade in palliative care. Her most recent book, Advice for Future Corpses and Those Who Love Them, is a frank and open discussion about the medicalization of the dying experience and the choices we can make to make a ‘good death’ more likely.

As a recent New York Times review said: “Tisdale does not write to allay anxieties but to acknowledge them, and she brings death so close, in such detail and with such directness, that something unusual happens, something that feels a bit taboo. She invites not just awe or dread—but our curiosity. And why not? We are, after all, just 'future corpses pretending we don’t know.'”

Join us for this free public lecture and reading sponsored by the Palliative Care Institute and the PeaceHealth St Joesph's Medical Center Foundation.
